A Milestone for Traditional Foods on the Publishers Weekly Bestsellers List

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping The Modern Pioneer Cookbook reach this special milestone on the Publishers Weekly Bestsellers List. The book market is filled with many excellent titles, including food books, cookbooks, and general non-fiction releases, so seeing a traditional foods cookbook recognized in this way is especially meaningful.

By getting a copy of my book, you have helped support more than a cookbook. You have helped keep traditional foods, old-fashioned recipes, and time-honored kitchen skills alive for modern home cooks. Many cookbook shelves today are filled with quick meals and convenience-focused recipes. Those books certainly have their place, but recipes such as bone broth, cultured dairy, and other traditional staples require patience, attention, and care. They are not fast foods, and that is part of their value.

These are the kinds of nourishing recipes our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents prepared in their own kitchens. They often cooked without digital scales, precise measurements, or modern appliances. Instead, they relied on experience passed down through generations. Whether they lived in the city or the countryside, they used real ingredients and practical techniques to prepare wholesome meals for their families.

My goal in writing The Modern Pioneer Cookbook was to preserve those time-tested recipes and make them approachable for today’s kitchens. This book is not only a collection of recipes. It is a practical guide to help you transform a processed foods kitchen into a traditional foods kitchen. With clear instructions, helpful guidance, and recipes inspired by what my mother taught me, along with my own years of cooking experience, I want you to feel confident that you can prepare traditional foods at home.

Book Font and Layout

Thank you for the thoughtful book reviews you have been leaving on the websites where you purchased The Modern Pioneer Cookbook. Reviews are very helpful because they allow other readers, home cooks, and families to learn more about the book and decide whether it will help them in their own kitchens. When a cookbook receives reviews and steady support, booksellers are more likely to recommend it to people searching for reliable traditional foods recipes.

I have also received many kind comments about the layout, design, and font used in the book. Working with Penguin Random House and the DK imprint was a blessing because I knew they had the experience to create a beautiful, practical, and reader-friendly cookbook. DK books have been part of our family for years, especially during the time when we homeschooled our son, so it was a joy to work with them on this project.

When I first began writing the cookbook, I was concerned about a trend I had noticed in many printed cookbooks: very small fonts. With eBooks, such as those read on Kindle devices, readers can often enlarge the text. Printed books, however, have a fixed font size. Since I love printed books and appreciate being able to use them even when the power is out or when digital access is unavailable, readability mattered a great deal to me.

I do not find small print comfortable to read, especially when cooking and moving around the kitchen. I shared this concern with my editor, and he worked with the book designer to choose a font and layout that would serve both the recipes and the readers. They selected an easy-to-read typeface, bold and clear print, and a welcoming design with plenty of room for photographs.

When I saw the first layout draft, I was delighted. The pages felt inviting, practical, and beautiful. Based on the comments and reviews I have read, many of you appreciate the font size, darker print, layout, and overall presentation of the cookbook too.
