DIY Gold Foil Candles for Elegant Home Decor

How to Make Gold Foil Candle Wraps

DIY Gold Foil Candles

This post was created in partnership with American Crafts and Heidi Swapp.

Hello, crafty friends! Today I’m sharing a beautiful and simple DIY project: gold foil candle wraps made with the Heidi Swapp Minc foil applicator. If you love metallic details, custom home décor, handmade gifts, or easy craft projects with a polished finish, this tutorial is a great one to try.

The Minc machine is designed to apply foil over laser-printed ink. It works in a similar way to a laminator, but it is made specifically for foil transfer projects. You place foil over a laser-printed design, slide everything into the clear carrier sleeve, and run it through the machine. When the foil is removed, the printed areas are transformed into a shiny metallic design.

For this project, I used gold foil to create elegant candle wraps. These DIY gold foil candle wraps are perfect for decorating plain candles for parties, weddings, holidays, table settings, handmade gifts, or everyday home décor. The finished look is bright, modern, and surprisingly easy to customize.

Supplies:

Minc Gold Foil
Minc Paper Pad or laser-printed paper design
Scissors
Adhesive spray or a strong adhesive glue stick
Plain candles

Step one: Start by trimming your paper and foil to fit the surface of your candle. Measure the area you want to cover and cut the paper slightly smaller or exactly to size, depending on the look you prefer. I like to leave a little extra foil around the edges of the printed paper so the design is completely covered.

It is very important that all printed ink is covered before you run the project through the machine. If any laser-printed ink is left exposed, it can transfer onto the clear sleeve. Once ink gets onto the sleeve, it may transfer onto future projects, so take a moment to check your placement carefully. Place your printed paper ink side up, then lay the foil over the design with the shiny foil side facing up.

Step two: Turn on the Minc machine and choose the correct heat setting for your material. For many paper projects, setting number 3 works well. Lower settings are typically used for delicate papers such as vellum, while higher settings are meant for thicker materials like chipboard.

Once your paper and foil are lined up, place them inside the clear carrier sleeve. Feed the sleeve into the machine and let it move through on its own. The process only takes about a minute, and the machine applies heat and pressure evenly to help the foil bond to the printed ink.

For these candle wraps, I used the negative space from the foil sheet instead of the printed cardstock. This creates a beautiful open design that can be wrapped around the candle for a delicate metallic effect.

Trim the used foil sheet to the size needed for your candle. Wrap it around the candle and secure it with adhesive spray or a strong glue stick. Smooth the wrap gently so it sits flat against the candle surface. Be careful not to press too hard, especially if your candle has a softer wax finish.

About the Minc Foil Applicator

The Minc machine works with laser-printed artwork and Heidi Swapp Minc products. The line is available through craft retailers, including JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, and independent craft stores. The foil applicator can be used for much more than candle wraps, making it a versatile tool for paper crafting and decorative projects.

• The Minc is fairly lightweight and compact, measuring about 19.5” x 5”, so it does not require a large amount of storage space.
• It can accept a 12” wide sheet, which makes it useful for larger craft projects.
• It has four pressure rollers to help distribute pressure evenly across a 12×12 surface.
• The heating element covers the full 12” width, helping create consistent foil transfer.
• Adjustable heat settings allow the machine to work with delicate materials such as vellum, as well as sturdier surfaces such as chipboard and thin wood veneer.

This foil applicator is a wonderful tool for scrapbooking, handmade cards, custom artwork, gift wrap, party decorations, home décor, and personalized gifts. Once you understand the basic process, it is easy to experiment with different designs and finishes. These DIY gold foil candle wraps are a simple way to start because they require only a few supplies and can instantly dress up plain candles.

Use them as centerpieces, add them to a mantel display, or make a set as a handmade gift. The gold foil adds just the right amount of shine, while the clean wrap design keeps the finished candles stylish and modern.
