Aperol Cosmopolitan Vodka Cocktail Recipe

It’s time to elevate the old college Cosmopolitan into a modern, refined Aperol vodka cocktail that’s fresh, balanced, and far removed from anything you’d order in 2001. This Aperol cocktail is my favorite way to showcase Aperol in a bright, sophisticated drink.

Aperol Cosmopolitan Cocktail

Say goodbye to heavy cranberry juice and triple sec for this version. Instead, this recipe uses Aperol and fresh lime to deliver tartness with a hint of sweetness and just enough bitterness to make the drink interesting. It’s a cleaner, more grown-up take on a familiar format—perfect for evenings when you want something elegant without being overly sweet.

We’re making a real, adult cocktail with Aperol and vodka. The result is crisp, citrusy, and instantly approachable.

You’re going to love this Aperol cocktail because it’s perfectly tart with just enough sweet to balance out the bitterness.

Aperol Cocktail

This version was inspired by a cocktail I enjoyed at a favorite downtown bar. Unlike the traditional Cosmo, it avoids cranberry juice altogether, so the flavors feel more focused and vibrant. Aperol, the Italian aperitivo that lends the drink its vivid color, brings a bittersweet orange-herb character. Combined with fresh lime, it provides the tart backbone you expect from a Cosmo while keeping the texture light and crisp.

The balance here is key: vodka provides a clean spirit base, Aperol contributes complexity and color, and lime juice supplies brightness. A small amount of simple sweetness—if desired—can be added to soften the edges, but many will find the natural harmony between Aperol and lime perfectly satisfying.

Admit it – this cocktail with Aperol feels ( and tastes ) SO much more adult than the old fashioned version, doesn’t it?!

Serve this Aperol Vodka Cocktail in your preferred glassware. I like coupe glasses because they offer a classic, crafted presentation that signals this isn’t the overly sweet cocktail you once knew. Coupes highlight the drink’s color and encourage sipping, which is perfect for appreciating the Aperol’s aromatic notes.

At home, asking for a “Cosmopolitan” usually means my husband, the designated mixologist, will make this Aperol version and serve it in a coupe. It has become our go-to when we want something polished but not fussy.

Planning to entertain? This recipe scales easily for a small gathering. Make a larger batch in a pitcher, keep it chilled, and add ice or shake individual pours just before serving to preserve the citrus brightness. The batch will hold in the refrigerator for a few hours, though the lime’s vibrancy will slowly mellow over time—so aim to serve within the first few hours for best results.

Aperol Cosmopolitan Cocktail

A grown-up twist on the classic Cosmopolitan: made with Aperol instead of cranberry juice for a bright, bittersweet, citrus-forward cocktail.
Course: Cocktail
Servings: 1 cocktail
Author: Basil and Bubbly

Ingredients

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz Aperol
  • lime twist for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the vodka, lime juice, and Aperol.
  2. Shake vigorously until well chilled, about 10–15 seconds.
  3. Double-strain into a chilled cocktail coupe or preferred glass.
  4. Run the lime twist around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.

Notes

If you prefer a slightly sweeter drink, add 1/4 oz simple syrup or an orange-flavored liqueur to taste. For a batch version, multiply the ingredients and keep chilled; shake individual servings with ice right before pouring for best flavor.
