Parmesan bacon green beans served as an easy side dish

Garlic green beans have always been a favorite in my home, so it only made sense to create a version with parmesan and bacon. The combination is simple but delicious: salty bacon, nutty parmesan, and fragrant garlic turn ordinary green beans into something that feels a little more special. This recipe is fast enough for a weekday dinner but flavorful enough to serve with a more complete meal when guests are at the table.

One of the best things about these sautéed green beans is how convenient they are. The recipe uses frozen green beans, which means there is very little prep work involved. There is no washing, trimming, or snapping required. Just open the bag and add the green beans to the skillet when it is time to cook. That makes this side dish especially helpful when you need something quick, warm, and homemade without spending a lot of extra time in the kitchen.

Frozen vegetables are also a smart option to keep on hand. They are usually affordable, easy to store, and ready whenever you need them. Since frozen green beans are picked and frozen at peak freshness, they can be just as nutritious as fresh green beans. They also do not spoil after a few days in the refrigerator, which makes meal planning much easier. If you like having healthy ingredients available for fast meals, keeping a few bags of frozen green beans in the freezer is a practical choice.

Can you use fresh green beans instead? Yes, fresh green beans will work too. The cooking time may need to be increased, and you may need to add a small splash of water to help soften them as they cook. Frozen green beans tend to soften quickly in the skillet, while fresh green beans usually need a little more time to become tender. Either option can be delicious, so use what you have available.

Green beans with bacon and parmesan in a skillet

This recipe can be made with turkey bacon or pork bacon. Turkey bacon works well when cooked with oil because the added fat helps it crisp nicely in the skillet. Pork bacon also works beautifully and will usually release more fat as it cooks, so you may not need to use as much oil when adding the green beans. The instructions below explain how to handle either option so you can choose the bacon you prefer.

The key to getting the best texture is to sauté the green beans long enough for them to become tender and slightly browned. Stir them often so they do not stick to the pan, and keep moving the browned pieces upward so the rest of the beans can make contact with the skillet. At the end, the garlic, bacon, and parmesan are added back in so the flavors come together without burning the garlic.

If you are looking for an easy vegetable side dish that is low effort but full of flavor, these Parmesan Bacon Green Beans are a great recipe to try. They pair well with many main dishes and bring a comforting, savory flavor to the table in less than half an hour.

These Parmesan Bacon Green Beans are sautéed with garlic, crispy bacon, and shredded parmesan for a flavorful side dish that is ready in only 25 minutes.
Prep: 5 mins
Cook: 20 mins
Total: 25 mins
Servings: 6 people

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon, diced; turkey bacon is preferred, but pork bacon also works
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil
  • 16 oz frozen green beans
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan

Instructions

  • Add the diced bacon to a large skillet. Cook over medium to medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the bacon is almost crispy. If you are using turkey bacon, add the oil at this stage so the extra fat helps the bacon crisp. Once the bacon is crisp, remove it from the skillet and set it aside.
  • Add the frozen green beans and oil to the skillet. If there is already plenty of bacon fat in the pan, use less oil. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Stir often because the green beans can stick to the pan. Move the browned green beans to the top so the remaining beans have a chance to brown as well.
  • Season the green beans with salt to taste.
  • Reduce the heat to low. Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and add the minced garlic. Stir to combine. Sprinkle the shredded parmesan over the green beans, cover the skillet, and cook for another 2 to 4 minutes. The green beans are ready when they are tender and have changed from bright green to a deeper shade.
  • Taste and add more salt if needed. Serve warm.

Notes

You can use fresh green beans if you prefer, but the cooking time will likely need to be increased. A small amount of water may help fresh green beans soften in the skillet.
Both pork bacon and turkey bacon work well in this recipe. The main difference is when to add the oil. Turkey bacon benefits from added oil at the beginning, while pork bacon usually releases more fat as it cooks.
