How to Host a Cozy Gingerbread House Making Party

It is officially that wonderful time of year again, and few holiday traditions feel more cheerful than gathering around a table to decorate gingerbread houses. This year, I am teaming up with The Inspired Home to host my annual gingerbread house making party, a festive evening that has become one of my favorite celebrations of the entire season.

Every December, I invite a small group of close girlfriends to my home for a relaxed night of gingerbread house decorating, cozy cocktails, Christmas movies, and plenty of holiday treats. I usually keep the guest list to about five or six people, which makes the evening feel intimate, easy to manage, and genuinely special. There is something so comforting about sitting together at the table, laughing over icing mishaps, passing bowls of candy back and forth, and slowly watching each little house become its own charming holiday creation.

Start with a Simple Gingerbread House Party Setup

You do not need a huge space, an elaborate menu, or hours of baking to host a memorable gingerbread house making party. The key is to make the decorating process easy, colorful, and fun for everyone. I like to set up one long table where all of my guests can sit together and build their houses. This keeps the party social and creates a beautiful centerpiece filled with candy, icing, sprinkles, and festive details.

Each guest receives a gingerbread house kit, which makes preparation much simpler. This year, I am using Wilton’s Gingerbread A-Frame House Kit. I love the look of the A-frame style because it feels a little more modern than the classic gingerbread house shape, while still being playful and festive. The kits also include plenty of fun toppings, which gives everyone a great starting point before they begin adding extra candy and decorations from the table.

Create a Candy Bar for Decorating

The best part of any gingerbread house decorating party is the candy. I place lots of colorful candies in small bowls down the center of the table so guests can easily see everything and choose what inspires them. A mix of colors, shapes, and textures makes the table look festive before the decorating even begins. It also helps everyone get creative, whether they want to make a classic candy-covered cottage, a bright and whimsical holiday house, or something completely unexpected.

To add even more color and variety, I like to include Wilton colored candy melts, icing, and festive sugar decorations. These small details make a big difference because they give guests more ways to personalize their houses. Candy melts can be used for bold accents, icing helps hold everything together, and sugar decorations add that extra touch of holiday sparkle. Keeping everything in small bowls also makes the table feel organized and inviting, rather than cluttered.

Add a Friendly Competition

One of my favorite ways to make the party feel even more exciting is to turn the decorating into a friendly contest. I always offer a small prize for the most creative gingerbread house. It does not need to be extravagant. In the past, I have chosen a gift card to Anthropologie or a bottle of champagne. It is a simple gesture, but it instantly gets everyone into the spirit of the night and encourages guests to have fun with their designs.

The competition is never too serious, which is exactly what makes it enjoyable. Everyone gets to admire each other’s work, share ideas, and laugh at the funny little details that happen along the way. Some houses turn out polished and pretty, while others become completely over-the-top in the best way. The goal is not perfection; it is about making memories and enjoying a cozy holiday tradition together.

Set the Holiday Mood

A gingerbread house making party feels most magical when the atmosphere is warm and relaxed. I love turning on a favorite Christmas movie in the background, lighting a few seasonal candles, and serving cozy cocktails or festive drinks. Soft music also works beautifully if you prefer a more dinner-party style setting. The idea is to create an environment where guests feel comfortable settling in for a slow, cheerful evening.

You can host this party in a living room, dining room, kitchen, or any space where a table can become the center of the celebration. A simple table covering can make cleanup easier, especially when icing and sprinkles are involved. Placing napkins, small plates, and extra utensils within reach also keeps the evening flowing smoothly so everyone can focus on decorating and enjoying the party.

Make It a New Holiday Tradition

For all of the items used to create this gingerbread soiree, you can visit The Inspired Home to see the party details and shop the pieces featured in the celebration. The right supplies make hosting easier, but the heart of the party is truly the time spent together.

This holiday season, consider turning your living room or dining room into a gingerbread house-building workshop. It is a festive, creative, and cozy way to gather with friends, celebrate December, and enjoy a night that feels special without being complicated. With a few gingerbread house kits, bowls of candy, icing, festive drinks, and a holiday movie playing in the background, you can create a tradition that everyone will look forward to year after year.
