The Ranch Table with Elizabeth Poett: Recipes from a Historic California Ranch
In Episode 80 of the Kitchen Confidante Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Elizabeth Poett, the star of Magnolia Network’s Ranch to Table and the author of The Ranch Table. Elizabeth is a seventh-generation cattle rancher whose family has cared for a historic 14,000-acre cattle ranch on California’s central coast for generations. Through her work on the ranch, on television, and at The Ranch Table, she shares the connection between agriculture, family, seasonal cooking, and gathering around good food.
Elizabeth founded The Ranch Table as a way to welcome people to the ranch through classes, dinners, and special events. Her cookbook brings that same spirit to the page, offering recipes inspired by harvests, celebrations, everyday meals, and the rhythm of ranch life. The book is rooted in the landscape of coastal California and reflects the way food changes with the seasons, the weather, and the work required throughout the year.
During our conversation, Elizabeth spoke about growing up on the ranch, learning from her parents, cooking with a relaxed and joyful approach, and appreciating the land that has shaped her family’s story. We also talked about what it means to be a rancher in California today, how seasonal ingredients influence her cooking, and why food is such an important part of bringing people together. Listen to the full episode below, or read on for highlights from our conversation about The Ranch Table, ranch life, and cooking from a historic California ranch.
What was it like growing up on a cattle ranch in California?
Elizabeth was born and raised on the ranch, which has been in her family for seven generations. Her sons will be the eighth generation to be connected to the land, continuing a family history that reaches back nearly two centuries.
Her ancestor was granted the land in 1837, and today Elizabeth and her family work to make sure the ranch remains sustainable, protected, and able to stay in the family. Their goal is to care for the land in a way that keeps it safe for cattle, wildlife, and future generations, while preserving the character of the ranch as much as possible.
Although cattle are central to ranch life, the land supports much more. Over the years, the family has also raised sheep and horses. They grow dry beans, lavender, honey, and other foods and products connected to the seasons. The ranch is also home to wildlife, which is an important part of the broader landscape and ecosystem.
Elizabeth learned many of her ranching skills from her father as she was growing up. From her mother, she learned how to cook and how to feel comfortable in the kitchen. Those two parts of her upbringing — working the land and preparing food — are deeply connected in the way she approaches cooking today.
Her mother encouraged creativity and ease in the kitchen. Rather than focusing on perfection, she treated recipes as suggestions and invited everyone to take part. The kitchen could be busy and even chaotic, but it was always welcoming. For Elizabeth, cooking was not meant to be stressful or overly formal. It was a way to gather, share stories, and enjoy being together. Her mother liked to keep things “tranquillo,” turning meals into opportunities for family and friends to connect.
Tell us more about your book, The Ranch Table
The Ranch Table takes readers through the seasons on Elizabeth’s family ranch in California. The book was created and photographed on the ranch, including in her home kitchen, with produce from the property and local ingredients from the surrounding area. Recipes such as Santa Maria Tri-Tip reflect the flavors of the region, while the ranch, the farm, and Elizabeth’s home provide the natural backdrop.
One of the central ideas of the cookbook is that every season has its own beauty, pace, and purpose. Spring, summer, fall, and winter each bring different ingredients, tasks, gatherings, and celebrations. Even the same season can feel different from one year to the next because of weather, harvests, and the changing needs of the land. Elizabeth embraces those differences and sees them as part of what makes ranch life exciting and meaningful.
The cookbook is a personal reflection of Elizabeth’s life, her family’s ranch, and the agricultural rhythms of California. It highlights local food and seasonal cooking, but it also emphasizes that cooking can be relaxing, joyful, and shared. Rather than presenting food as something complicated or intimidating, The Ranch Table encourages readers to prepare meals that bring people together.
Life on the ranch requires hard work all year long, but Elizabeth explains that in her community, work and celebration naturally go hand in hand. Meals mark the seasons, honor the labor behind the food, and create moments of connection after long days. Through the book, she hopes readers will feel inspired to cook delicious food, welcome others to the table, and enjoy the simple pleasure of gathering with family and friends.
